Celebration of shame
Some days ago, I saw Larry King interview with pop diva Lady Gaga iconoclastic in its program. In the interview, the singer said she grew up in a Catholic family, believes in Jesus, and pray often. Then he proudly announced: "My show is a celebration of shame!" She went on to explain that his music has to do with challenging conventional values and codes of morality.
What Lady Gaga, said in his interview should not be surprising Christians. She was merely echoing the mood of our culture. We live in a society that has its moral compass out of control, where people are not ashamed to showcase their passions, however unpleasant they are perverted. The Bible says: "The unjust knows no shame" (Zephaniah 3: 5).
Curiously, the story of shame begins in the Garden of Eden, where the first human couple lived. The Bible says, "And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed "(Gen. 2:25). They were not ashamed because they were in a state of moral innocence, sin had not entered their lives. Without But when he sinned, his moral innocence was gone, their eyes were opened, and they knew they were naked. His response was not to celebrate nakedness, but to cover with the figure leaves. They were ashamed! So, shame entered the human experience as a consequence of sin.
In the Bible, shame represents a state of moral failure in the eyes of God. For example, in connection with the rebels of Judah, God asks: "Is ashamed of his disgusting actions? In all, not even know how to blush "(Jeremiah 6:15). Paul identifies the enemies of the cross of Christ as those who brag about shameful things (Phil. 3:19). Jude calls false teachers who corrupt the church "unthinking animals" and "shameless pastors." Often, the words "ashamed" is used as a language for the judgmental (Psalm 119:31; Dan. 12:2, Rom. 10:11). In fact, shame has a dark history, is not something to boast.
The remedy for spiritual nakedness and shame is not a celebration, but to be clothed in the garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10). Paradoxically, the only place where one can find the garment of salvation on the cross, the image of shame. On the cross, Jesus bore our sins and died despising the shame. In their infinite wisdom, God turned the cross, the image of shame and alienation, a symbol of forgiveness liberation and restoration.
For a person wearing the garment of salvation, shame is a moral deterrent. Paul reminds Christians it is "shameful even to speak of the things that ungodly people do in secret" (Eph. 5:12), just as it is a shame for believers to sue each other in a secular court instead of resolving their conflicts with one another (1 Cor. 6:4-5). Furthermore, when we are wrapped in the cloak of justice, are not ashamed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ (Rom. 1: 16) or suffer for Christ (1 Pet. 4:16). Lady Gaga is for knowing that divine order is very clear: we do not celebrate shame, but reject all shameful deeds, because God has given us a new way in Christ (2 Cor. 4:1-2).
