What really means obedience and how parents can teach their children to obey? According to the Oxford Dictionary, to obey the means to meet with the mandate, direction or request of a person (in this case, parents). It also means behave in accordance with a principle or law. God has given parents and guardians responsibility to teach their children that in this world that will meet the law. Children need to know that there will be laws and regulations are met in the normal course of life this world (eg, driving on the right side of the road, not stealing, no fighting, wash our hands before eating, etc.) and it's not a bad result when laws are not obeyed. Also need to learn that the rules are set in place for their protection when they are old enough to understand this. Parents should teach this first principle in their homes. The rules are simple first that there is a time to sleep, once to play and a time to eat.
Parents should establish rules very clear about acceptable behavior within their homes, and teach their children to meet these standards, the realization that without a standard, there can be no disobedience. A child can not be accused of disobeying their parents when the rules have not been set and clearly communicated to the child. Children do not control the home or set the rules - The parents do. Once the parents have established the rules, but must also bring their children the consequences for disobeying the rules. The onus is on parents to be consistent in the application of obedience, and in the penalty.
It is believed that the greatest damage done to children, is where a lack of consistency. A moment Jimmy disobeys her parents and is punished, and the next time he does the same and not punished. As expected, this requires a lot of discipline and commitment from their parents.
When our children were much younger, my husband and I set standards in our home that we expect our children to obey. When we disobeyed, he was punished by spanking (three strikes in the ass, and always in private), only after asking if they knew why we were spanking them. I still remember them asked: "Why am I going to hit you?" Then we would wait to tell us why we were to spank. I remember many times when one of our children disobey and not feel like punishing them, because it took a great effort to bring them to a private place and engage in conversation. However, I remind myself that I had to be consistent.
Our son is 24 now and still reminds us how much she hated when asked if he knew why he was being punished! It has however, said they will do the same with their children because they feel that clearly communicate to him that we were not whip him because I hated it, but for love of him. This truth is embraced in Proverbs 13: 24 - "He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him."
In the account of the conversation between Jimmy and his father, one can see how many principles have been violated. It should be clear that Jimmy is not in contact with bottles of medicine under any circumstances. The fact that he is asking his father, means it is not clear to him if allowed to use a medication or not. His father is a poor car, which ignored his "student" questions. Jimmy's father says, "Have not I always told you to be obedient?" however, does not make clear what has to obey and the consequences for disobedience. His father tells Jimmy that the next time he does what he will punish him. If there is a rule that Jimmy has disobeyed then why not being punished now? The answer is that Dad is more interested in reading about the stock values that he is to teach your child to obey.
Finally, parents should make a distinction between disobedience and error. Children should not be punished for their mistakes, but by the disobedience - "Clearly I do not do that, but have done so suffer." There is a difference between a child who has a glass across the room, tripping over something and fell, breaking glass, and a child who breaks the glass in the process of playing with him at the table while he is supposed to be eating. It should only be punished in the second case if it has been clearly indicated to him before the incident, which is not to play at the table, but to eat their food. It should also be informed of the punishment they receive, should be caught playing at the table rather than eat food.
Why am I belaboring this point? We need to understand how a person subsequently behaves in society is a reflection of how he was taught to behave like a child while he or she is still pliable. Unfortunately many of our prisons are filled with people who never taught them about the consequences of misconduct when they were growing. There is a Swahili saying that goes "na na Gebretsadik funzwa Asiye ata funzwa dunia" - He who is taught by his mother will be taught by the world!
